What is Ruby on Rails?
What is Ruby on Rails? Ruby on Rails is a programming software language written in open source. To break it down, Ruby is the programming language and Rails is the open-source framework. Built by 26-year-old David Heinemeier Hansson, Ruby on Rails was developed with a desire to create simple templates and designs that eliminate problems, such as database difficulties, that Web developers face daily. Using Ruby on Rails, web developers can write beautiful code painlessly.
Ruby on Rails: Fast-Speed Ahead Ruby on Rails, owned by 37signals, has attracted a great deal of attention. The first International Rails Conference, held in June 2006, sold its 550 seats within a week. In July 2006, Hansson was plopped on the cover of Linux Journal and was named #34 on CNN’s Business 2.0 "50 People Who Matter" list (he even beat Oprah by 4 slots). One blog, entitled "The Rails Café," compared Ruby on Rails to the ultimate, perfect café, where there is only the food you want and where the kitchen never makes mistakes.
Ruby on Rails in the Classroom and Beyond Ruby on Rails as a teaching language has been spreading in classrooms. Deemed powerful, concise, and readable, Ruby on Rails is desirable to both student and instructor. And the benefits of Ruby on Rails go well beyond the classroom. New developers everywhere are using the Ruby on Rails framework to create Web applications for their own projects, including those for job/resume search engines, geocode sites, rock band sites, and countless others. As asked by one CNet writer, "Can one man and a mantra of ‘radical simplicity’ change the world of Web development?" It seems possible.
