What is Ajax?
Reinventing the Web
Ajax is an innovative approach to Web design, a mass of top technologies working together--including HTML, XML, and JavaScript--to create interactive Web applications. Penned by computer guru Jesse James Garrett in 2005, Ajax brings fantastic new possibilities to Web design. Or as SD Times puts it: "While interactive Web pages aren’t new, Garrett defines a standards-based approach that reinvents the Web." But this does not mean the invention is complete. On the contrary, Ajax provides a whole new starting point for Web designers worldwide.

What is the Appeal of Ajax?
Ajax offers the possibility of Web programs as quick and smooth as modern desktop software. Web developers can remove the click-and-wait quality of the Web by creating an Ajax engine. The Ajax engine acts as a go-between for server and user, so that ordinary tasks--expanding Web forms, returning search queries, or updating records, for instance--are made easier. But there are problems with Ajax that must be solved, including its interference with the browser’s back button. While this and other limitations have far from erased Ajax from the map, they have led to a need for college-educated Web developers with a background in Ajax.

Who Is Using Ajax?
The list of businesses using Ajax is noteworthy and long. On the list are Google Suggest, Google Calendar and Google Maps. Others include Yahoo! Photos, MSN Spaces, and Ask.com. The list is growing, and, as more Web developers flock to Ajax with their own ideas, the bigger it will become. It may be safe to assume that Ajax will become a "must" in a Web-developer’s vocabulary.
