Usability Tips

Research has shown that about 60% of the time, Web users cannot find the information they’re looking for on Web sites. Apply the following usability tips for Web designers, increase your Web site's usability, and your work will be in the winning minority that receives repeat visits and brings in the cash.
  • Ease of Learning: Reading from a computer screen is not the same as reading from paper. Most people reading online want to scan and read short sections. In order to address this, write in small chunks with many headings. Use lists and tables. Use bullet points.
  • Efficiency of Use: Design your Web site so that viewers do not have to wait long for the site to download. While you may have a neat animation you’d like to include, for example, if the idea means a significant delay for your viewer, scratch it.
  • Memorability: There are about 43 million Web sites. From simple usefulness to catchy phrasing, find ways to make yours stand out from the competition.
  • Error Frequency and Severity: Viewers will drop back by your site only if they experience a relatively error-free visit. Conduct usability tests to determine what helps users complete their tasks and what may impede them.
  • Subjective Satisfaction: Visitors to your Web site should leave feeling positive about the experience. Continue to assess your Web site to achieve on-going viewer satisfaction.
People don’t like wasting time, reducing their productivity, and feeling frustration. Your Web sites will need to be quite usable, or you will lose repeat visits and, subsequently, money. Apply these usability tips for Web designers and improve your Web sites’ usability and your earnings.
