Java Developers Can Test Drive the Google Web Toolkit
Google, fast on its way of becoming all things to everyone, released its open-source Google Web Toolkit last May in an effort to play nice with Java and Ajax developers. Asynchronous JavaScript and XML developers experience incompatibility drawbacks to their developed pages, and the idea behind the Google Web Toolkit was to make it possible to create cross-functional applications like their proprietary Google Maps and Google Mail easier to compile.
The mission, according to Google, is "to radically improve the web experience for users by enabling developers to use existing Java tools to build no-compromise AJAX for any modern browser." The standards-compliant kit is already in version 1.3 and can be downloaded at Google (http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/download.html) under the Apache 2.0 open-source license in versions for Windows XP/2000, Linux (GTK+ 2.2.1+), and Mac OS X platforms.
The Google Web Toolkit is, in short, a JavaScript generator. It helps automate both the writing and deployment of web-based interfaced based on a service-oriented Java architecture. The toolkit objects help compile requests and server return values without having to crunch out a lot of trial and error coding.
When you run your Java creation, the Google Web Toolkit code is executed on the client browser, eliminating middle tier data transactions, placing less of a load on the server. On the down side, the applications may be limited from linking to existing Java libraries. Developers will no doubt realize benefits of the toolkits ability to create AJAX components to embed in static pages or existing applications.
