Handcoding vs. WYSIWYG - Which Is the Best for You?

In the programming and Web design worlds, there are 2 very different approaches to coding. There is the traditional method in which you manually code every single line using program-specific language. And there is also the WYSIWYG method in which you rely on a user-friendly interface that shows you what each change and addition looks like as you implement it. WYSIWYG stands for "what you see is what you get," and it offers real-time representations of the final product. If you want to add a red border at the top of the page, you don't need to know the special coding and syntax for borders, position, and the color red. You simply click the appropriate buttons in the WYSIYG editor to add a red border at the top of the page.

Advantages to WYSIWYG
With a WYSIWYG editor, you don't have to know too much about programming and coding. Many of the better packages out there have all of the tools and options you would need for most Web design projects. Borders, fonts, colors, positions, hyperlinks, menu items, you name it. WYSIWYG is also faster than normal coding as well. You can potentially finish an entire Web site or page entry in a fraction of the time it would take with traditional programming. WYSIWYG is convenient, reliable, and usually hassle-free.

Advantages to Handcoding
There are many Web design functions that WYSIWYG can't always duplicate. Handcoding allows for greater supervision and control. It's like the difference between a professional camera and a point-and-shoot camera. The latter offers convenience and speed, but for professional photos, you might want that extra level of flexibility. This can be especially important if your client or employer has unusual Web design needs.

Which is best for you? Ideally, you should feel comfortable using both methods. Handcoding, however, can make you more marketable in the long run. Most traditional coders can easily master WYSIWYG. The reverse is not always true.
