Getting that Web 2.0 Look

Web 2.0 is the new frontier in web design and functionality. If you're looking for the same old static click, search, surf blindly off a list of links mentality, stay home. Web 2.0 is about interactivity at the speed of your brain, with larger-than-life icons, navigational features that look like blunt instruments, and a landing page that looks like a busy airport, with instant clicks on RSS, podcasts, and social software.

Web 2.0 design is about rapid fire functionality and easy navigation to provide easily highlighted features with obvious alternatives. That means a slenderized interface with bulky image buttons a four-year-old could click, and oversized fonts that blast out headers and diminish to large headings where 14 point font is -- well, yesterday.

The premise for Web 2.0 design is that your main page is truly a launch pad for interactivity. No one lingers and reads long paragraphs any more. That's for Charles Dickens. Look at the download button on Mozilla's Firefox browser page (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/). Even a luddite like Fred Flintsone could find and click this button without having to gnaw his way through a user manual.

Lastly, think of Christmas all year 'round. All your hyperlinked goodies are positioned neatly about a very simple layout of delectable boxes. Look left, look right, look down -- it's clickable! In Web 2.0, the page is democratic, articulated by interactive visitors, and there's little room -- or the inclination for -- a clutter of graphic mayhem and madness. Functionality is form.
